It is finally-finally done,
every SNES RPG available in English, official and fan-translated are beaten!
I expected to be done with this a few years ago but we have gotten much
more new interesting games in the last few years than I ever could have
dreamed off! With this my biggest goal is done, SNES-PS1-PS2, the three
best RPG homes all beaten. I will keep coming back to them whenever new
fan-translations pop up but for now we celebrate in the usual way,
with a long long list!
My worst and messiest list yet and a lot of things could jump around
depending on day and mood, not as absolute as I would like…
The fact that the games are beaten over a 33 year period makes it hard to
compare and rank them now and you will see a chunk in the middle where I
got lazy and can’t really rank them correctly.
The top 3 are the only ones that never change!
While PS1 and PS2 was played on original hardware SNES was mixed,
fan-translations where played on emulator and I will admit that some
of them would either never be beaten or take a few more years without
savestates, haha.
It is actually split into a few different lists as you will notice further down.
Don’t worry if your favorite is ranked low or didn’t get much text,
I still love all of them to some extent, enough to actual play them after all!
Enjoy and thank you SNES!
I might as well thank everyone who have followed this long journey
and kept me inspired too including a few streamers with similar or
even identical goals!
Beaten and ranked:
#1 Chrono Trigger
It would be pretty rare to not see it as number one!
I said it before but this is where my love for the genre
truly got cemented and I spent so much time just playing it
over and over, seeing new scenarios thanks to party combinations
and being a little bit better at English each time!
#2 Tales of Phantasia
A technical marvel on all fronts and a great story as a
bonus, still my favorite in the series!
#3 Lufia 2: Rise of the Sinistrals
This game has it all, everything from music to humor
and monster design just speaks to me! Add the cool puzzles,
amazing ending and the infinite joy of the ancient cave.
One of the best RPGs ever with the best rogue-like as a bonus!
#4 Terranigma
As a kid I kept confusing this and Chrono Trigger,
which one had that cool stained glass?
Maybe with good reason, the quality and especially set pieces
are of the same caliber!
the balance of levels/stats is quite broken and I always wish
there was even more to do on the world map but what we got
is a true and unique masterpiece!
#5 Final Fantasy VI
Aside from the obvious music and well known qualities of the game
the second half is always my reference point for how sidequests and
open worlds should be done!
#6 Secret of Mana
Ah, the one and only three player co-op RPG!
It has brought me so much joy over the years and it is almost
tradition that any new friend to the family has to play it with us, haha.
#7 Illusion of Time/Gaia
A big dose of nostalgia combined with also liking the themes and
settings even more over TIME.
#8 Super Mario RPG
The first turn based RPG I ever beat even if I had tried Chrono Trigger
before. Also my first time seeing the letter combination
RPG, the rest is history.
#9 Rudra no Hihou
I really want to replay this and after Live a Live I hope we have a chance
for a good remake! Basically FFVI-2 or SNES FFVII,
play it if you like FFVI!
#10 Star Ocean
Another technical marvel, even more so than Phantasia but a bit
weaker in everything else.
#11 Seiken Densetsu 3
Why no official 3 player co-op!!
Japan explain!
#12 Soulblazer
The first real RPG I ever beat and while nostalgia is strong it
is also a really fun simple game to play and the way you restore towns
still feels unique! It was also the first game that showed me that death
could be sad and have meaning in games. Until this, life was just a
resource you could farm, haha.
#13 Secret of Evermore
Ah, the Black sheep of Square! While the humor and story is mostly silly
the unique world and contents truly stands out, the marketplace is still
one of my favorite places in any game.
#14 Breath of Fire 2
This game still fills me with dread and I often
hum the final boss song.
#15 Live A Live
The remake is actually the better choice to play now
but a great game in every version!
#16 Lufia and the Fortress of Doom
While a bit primitive especially compared to the second game
it really speaks to me and is the pure essence of RPG!
#17 Energy Breaker
One of the true gems that still seems to be mostly hidden!
From the creators of Lufia comes a strategy RPG hybrid where
you still get to explore dungeons unlike most in the sub genre.
#18 Lagoon
The soundtrack and nostalgia goes a long way!
I didn’t know it until much later but it really is a Ys clone,
the original X68000 version even has the bump combat which
explains the lack of range when they added the attack button
on SNES, haha.
#19 Earthbound
I spent years disliking this based on the setting and first hour.
Glad I finally played the whole game and can join the fandom!
#20 Dragon Quest V
I rank it third in the series after XI and VIII, mostly for story reasons.
#21 Final Fantasy IV
Aside from all the fake deaths a great game,
I love fighting the optional bosses so much!
#22 Final Fantasy V
Greater than IV in a lot of ways but I prefer my
simple level systems, haha.
#23 Heracles no Eiko 4
Another of the true gems! This game has so much
greatness going on including the fact that you can shape
shift into different NPCs! Give it a try!
#24 Lennus II
An upgrade from Paladins quest in every way,
so much strangeness going on.
#25 Daikaijyuu Monogatari
This might be the one biggest surprise in the whole library for
me, looking at the box and the characters it seemed like a silly
kids game but in the end it mostly reminds me of Lufia for some reason
and I liked it so much that I went on to beat the second game too
before it even had a translation!
#26 Daikaijyuu Monogatari 2
I played it with a guide before the fan translation was available
but it more or less improves everything from the first and it
might get a higher rating if I replay it.
#27 Chaos Seed
My 1000th beaten game and I wrote a long text about it on the site!
#28 Breath of Fire
Another game of pure RPG essence, the second game improved
everything but this was a solid start for sure.
#29 Mystic Ark
This game can only be described as playing a dream or
maybe playing a piece of art, I love it!
#30 Heracles no Eiko 3
This is more or less identical to the fourth game,
just less polished in every aspect, haha.
#31 Tenshi no Uta: Shiroki Tsubasa no Inori
A lovely love story from the makers of Phantasia!
#32 Dragon Quest 3
This is where they really found the formula and
what the series would become and be, very solid.
#33 G.O.D
The first hours was a lot stronger than the later
but be sure to play those first ones at least!
#34 Laplace no Ma
I really want to place this high and love it but
I will admit that I remember very few details outside the
amazing setting and RPG horror combo…
#35 Der Langrisser
Very solid strategy RPG, music and artstyle are fantastic.
#36 Ys V: Ushinawareta Sunano Miyako Kefin
The black Ys sheep, still not available in English officially,
when I played the fan translation wasn’t done either…
One of the very few games to simulate 3D with heights etc.
#37 Metal Max Returns
All of the metal max games are more or less the same,
hunt monsters while riding silly vehicles in an open world.
It is great.
#38 Emerald Dragon
I want to place this high but looking back
I’m not sure why it would rank higher than the
great middle lump.
#39 Far East of Eden Zero Tengai Makyou
One of the holy translation grails,
with its built in real time clock it did it before
Animal Crossing! In the end it almost adds nothing
but a great RPG too even without the gimmick.
#40 Super Robot Taisen Aiden Lord of Elementals
By far the best of all the robot games and I could
finally see how and why Xenogears got inspired by them!
#41 Dragon View
I can’t believe this got a modern release on Steam,
a great combo of 3D world map, sideview beat em up combat
with levels and gear, not to mention the music!
#42 Ys IV: Mask of the Sun
Bump-bump!
#43 Dual Orb 2
Another above average but still standard RPG,
The battle sprites are so good!
#44 Wozz
I remember it as great but it was also ages ago.
#45 Arabian Nights: Sabaku no Seirei Ou
A bit short but great while it lasts!
#46 Eien no Filena
Another above average but still standard RPG.
#47 Treasure Hunter G
Such an odd graphic style and decent battles,
I remember almost zero of the story though.
#48 Paladins Quest
I always hated the odd sci-fi environments in this and never got past
the first town but after playing the whole game I would say
the oddness is the strength of the game!
#49 Front Mission
A great start to a great series!
#50 Dark Half
Such a cool concept to play both the hero and villain party
and being able to kill NPCs and destroy towns to make the journey
harder for the good party, love it!
#51 Bahamut Lagoon
A visual spectacle with cool dragons everywhere!
#52 Horai Gakuen no Bouken! The Adventure of Hourai High School
Long before the school setting got old!
#53 Burning Heroes
The original Octopath with 8 characters/scenarios by Enix.
It gets very repetitive if you do them all but there is a
cool story to piece together if you have the patience.
#54 Last Bible 3
It might be my favorite “SMT” game, haha.
More of a standard RPG but still with a lot of the
familiar elements from the series.
#55 Shin Megami Tensei
I never expected to one day play more or less the whole series,
the monster parties and first person dungeons always scared me
away and while they still aren’t my favorites I am happy to
have made the long journey and killed god over and over.
Not sure how I would rank them, in a lump for now…
#56 Shin Megami Tensei II
Probably better than the first, the final dungeon still
haunts me!
#57 Shin Megami Tensei If…
The Persona prototype!
#58 Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei 1
I split this into two entries
since it is a remake of the two NES games
and the very start of the series.
#59 Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei 2
#60 Majin Tensei
SMT but in strategy format! It works much
better than I expected.
#61 Majin Tensei II Spiral Nemesis
I think the first game was better?
#62 Fire Emblem: Thracia 776
I planned to play this as the last game since it released last
and since I heard it was very hard. I changed the order a bit
and compared to the holy war this was a walk in the park,
mostly thanks to better inventory management and the way you can
level up in coliseums. I love how it connects and expands the story
of the holy war!
#63 Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
This was by far my longest game and probably greatest struggle
on the whole list! I hate the permanent deaths so much and
the amount of reloading I did removed any fun there might have been.
The story and following the characters through the generations
are great though!
#64 Ys III: Wanderers from Ys
One of the very shortest games on the list
and oddly enough a platform/sideview perspective.
Hearing the music always puts me in a good mood!
#65 Romancing Saga 3
Surprisingly low placement maybe but I can
never be friends with the SaGa systems and
every battle is a struggle for me.
#66 Dark Law: Meaning of Death
As one of the coolest and hardest games to find and being
released late in 1997 I probably wanted it to be better than it is, haha.
Also, I failed to make a party at the start of the game making it
extremely hard…
#67 Albert Odyssey
I wish more strategy games worked like this,
you explore the world map pretty freely with
enemies roaming around instead of the usual stage based combat.
#68 Ancient Magic: Bazoe! Mahou Sekai
Standard good not great RPG, I love playing them but
leaves no lasting impression.
#69 Shiki Eiyuuden
Standard good not great RPG, I love playing them but
leaves no lasting impression.
#70 Magna Braban
Standard good not great RPG, I love playing them but
leaves no lasting impression.
#71 Silva Saga 2
Standard good not great RPG, I love playing them but
leaves no lasting impression.
#72 Hero Senki: Project Olympus
Standard good not great RPG, I love playing them but
leaves no lasting impression.
#73 Aretha II
Standard good not great RPG, I love playing them but
leaves no lasting impression.
#74 Aretha
Standard good not great RPG, I love playing them but
leaves no lasting impression.
#75 Ryuuki Heidan Danzarb
Standard good not great RPG, I love playing them but
leaves no lasting impression.
#76 Robotrek
Standard good not great RPG, I love playing them but
leaves no lasting impression.
#77 Secret of the Stars
Standard good not great RPG, I love playing them but
leaves no lasting impression.
#78 Xak
Standard good not great RPG, I love playing them but
leaves no lasting impression.
#79 Record of Lodoss War
Standard good not great RPG, I love playing them but
leaves no lasting impression.
#80 La Wares
Standard good not great RPG, I love playing them but
leaves no lasting impression.
#81 Brain Lord
Action RPG that I should probably replay!
#82 Front Mission Gunhazard
Such a cool sideview take on Front Mission!
#83 Sailor Moon Another Story
More or less my only interaction with Sailor Moon,
it didn’t leave a strong impression but it was decent.
#84 Power of the Hired
Very simple but good strategy game!
#85 FEDA The Emblem of Justice
A pretty good and standard tactics RPG.
#86 The 7th Saga
Far from the hardest as the rumors might say
but depending on party combination it can be a pain for sure
and maybe live up to the reputation. The enemy radar is a cool
idea for sure!
#87 Sword World SFC
It is kinda mission based and it can be
quite hard to figure out the story triggers.
#88 Princess Minerva
Is this where the trend began of RPG girls
doing battle in underwear?
#89 Final Fantasy Mystic Quest
I was skeptical but it is actually a fun game
and I always like small party constellations!
#90 Dragon Quest 1
Speaking of small party constellations,
I would love more games with just a single
character but still turn based like this!
#91 Dragon Quest 2
You can already see what the series would become!
#92 Cyber Knight II
Better than the first but still slow.
#93 Cyber Knight
Mostly a slow slug but with some cool ideas,
like a planet map that can only be called a
Mass effect precursor!
#94 Wizardry VI: Bane of the Cosmic Forge
I thought this would be a technicality to beat after the
other 5 but they changed some systems around!!
Most of them for the better though making it the
probably best of the six.
#95 Wizardry I
I NEVER thought I would get through a Wizardry and
it was my first time going all out, drawing full maps,
taking notes and learning all the odd systems of western
RPGs. It was a pain and it was fun too but for the rest of the
series I was more lazy and a lot of savestates where used since
the RNG is just the worst and not something I enjoy at all.
#96 Wizardry II: Legacy of Llylgamyn The Third Scenario
I just list them in a lump, too hard to rank.
#97 Wizardry Knight of Diamond
I just list them in a lump, too hard to rank.
#98 Wizardry Gaiden IV: Throb of the Demon’s Heart
I just list them in a lump, too hard to rank.
#99 Wizardry V
I just list them in a lump, too hard to rank.
#100 Light Fantasy
I believe it was auto-translated but still not the worst one
I have seen, haha. Very basic game, surprised it got a sequel.
#101 Neugier
Short action RPG that like Ys V tries to simulate height
between platforms, it does a worse job…
#102 Crystal Beans
Simple action RPG.
#103 Hiouden
This game moves in 1 fps thanks to the record amount
of sprites/units on the screen. Really hard but cool
strategy game.
#104 Monstania
The perfect beginner strategy game?
Short simple and fun.
#105 Fushigi no Dungeon 2: Fuurai no Shiren
Classic random dungeons, not my favorite type of
games but it can be fun for a while!
#106 Torneko no Daibouken: Fushigi no Dungeon
Classic random dungeons, not my favorite type of
games but it can be fun for a while!
#107 Popful Mail
No translation but simple enough sideview
action RPG.
#108 Brandish 2
Better but very similar to the first.
#109 Brandish
This seemed like a nightmare at first thanks to the
rotating camera but once learn to work with it the
game is actually quite fun!
#110 Jutei Senki
Almost a pure strategy game with some small upgrades
but a cool short mech game.
#111 Tenchi Muyo!: Game Hen
Anime strategy, it’s decent fun!
#112 Might and Magic III: Isles of Terra
The very last game I played on the list!
The worst for last was my idea. In the end the feelings are mixed,
I like open worlds and a lot of the ideas in theory but actually
playing and figuring out all the systems is a pain!
The first 20 hours was mostly me casting healing magic over and
over in the super slow menus ported from PC to SNES with
expected results. Once the game stole my hard earned exp for some
reason I found out about the debug menu and just gave myself
levels and used that for quick healing the rest of the game, haha.
#113 Dai-3-Ji Super Robot Taisen
I’m sorry to say these blends together a bit for me,
some of the robot games are more or less pure strategy games
and other more of RPGs, it has been fun to finally form some
more bonds with the world of super robots but I’m still far from
calling myself a fan.
#114 Super Robot Taisen EX
This should be one of the better and RPG like ones.
#115 Kidou Senshi Gundam: Cross Dimension 0079
And this should be more of the strategy based,
I remember some really painful battles in one or both games.
#116 Kidou Senshi Gundam F91:
Formula Senki 0122
And this should be more of the strategy based,
I remember some really painful battles in one or both games.
#117 Galaxy Robo
A very standard strategy RPG in space.
#118 Arcana
A simple and beginner friendly dungeon crawler.
#119 Inindo: Way of the Ninja
A lot of people seem to
have missed it even though it was released in
English. Based on Chinese lore and territories that
you can invade/ control. An odd mix of a normal RPG
and a strategy game.
#120 Shadowrun
Another case of me being anti western style RPGs,
it is a cool game but I want clear goals and not get
shot as soon as I go outside, haha.
The only SNES RPG to have an official Swedish translation!
#121 Gulliver Boy
A simple short Action RPG, the story moves at rocket speed!
#122 Espark
Not translated but I used a guide, it looks really nice but
this game is back tracking from hell, all you do is go back and forth
in the same few screens constantly!
#123 Magical Knight Rayearth
Far too simple but with charm.
#124 Ultima Savage Empire
Aside from one specific item hidden inside a random rock
this was the most playable Ultima for me, I like the idea
of uniting the tribes too.
#125 Ultima VII Black Gate
I can see why the series got so popular and big, if this is
the only game you have to play and the time of youth to search
every corner there is a lot of entertainment in there!
#126 Ultima VI
I can see why the series got so popular and big, if this is
the only game you have to play and the time of youth to search
every corner there is a lot of entertainment in there!
#127 Ultima: Runes of Virtue II
This should be called more of a simple side game
unique to SNES?
#128 Uncharted Waters
Trade or pirate your way to riches and a bigger fleet around the world!
It does a great job of capturing how big the world is
when you have to sail for weeks and months to reach a trading post.
#129 Uncharted Waters: New Horizons
It is 95% identical to the first game, one of the
most pointless sequels I have seen!
#130 Bushi Seiryuuden
Game Freaks without pokemons! Well, there kinda is pokemons,
you can see some similarities even if this have sideview
action combat.
#131 Drakkhen
Ugh that 3D map, but the game has some interesting ideas at least.
#132 Ranma 1/2
Being a fan probably helps a lot, haha.
#133 Slayers
Being a fan probably helps here too!
#134 J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings:
Volume 1
I never got the 5 player co-op to work but a cool
game in theory. Playing it can be a pain though,
especially if you miss that one item in the first dungeon
like I did… see you in volume 2!
#135 Shodai Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-Kun
Beat em up RPG, River city ransom relative.
#136 Super Chinese World 3
The fact that you can switch between turn based
and action combat makes it very cool and best of the three!
#137 Super Chinese World 2
I’m not a fan of these simple beat em up RPGs
but they do get a bit better each entry.
#138 Super Ninja Boy
I’m not a fan of these simple beat em up RPGs
#139 Madou Monogatari
Kid RPG for kids!
#140 Kero Kero Keroppi
No fan translation but also aimed at kids so
easy and short to get through with some
hello kitty characters making an appearance!
#141 Dragon Ball Z: Super Gokuden Totsugeki-Hen
It follows the manga pretty well from what
I understand and after playing this I have no idea
how the series ever got popular, haha.
#142 Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure
Not bizarre enough!
#143 Obitus
One of the 4 RPGs Japan didn’t get on this list,
a simple short dungeon crawler.
#144 Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Eye of the Beholder
If this is the advanced version I don’t want the simple!
#145 Dragon Ball Z: Chou Saiya Densetsu
The translation for this was terrible,
I flew all over the place and did things!
#146 Kessen! Dokapon Oukoku IV: Densetsu no Yuusha-tachi
RPG boardgame, I’m sure you could have fun with some
actual players but against the computer it is just a waiting game.
#147 Dokapon Gaiden: Honoo no Audition
RPG boardgame, I’m sure you could have fun with some
actual players but against the computer it is just a waiting game.
#148 Yume Meikyuu
They have captured a nightmare perfectly
in this dungeon crawler!
#149 Villgust
It feels like someone wanted to do the most simple
and generic RPG possible, this could deserve the last
spot but the giant chibi characters are fun to look at at least.
#150 Dungeon Master
Aside from the game moving in 1 fps sometimes (most time)
it wasn’t that bad to get through but I’m sure glad it is over!
#151 Might and Magic Book II
Apparently there are different versions of this
and getting through it was a real pain when no
guides seemed to help either.
#152 Yamato Takeru
Eh, it might not deserve last place but I played it with guide
since no translation is available, all I did was go between identical
towns and fought to become the best ninja.
Beaten special cases
This is where I list the ones that might be
disputed as RPGs by me or others.
-The Legend of Zelda: a Link to the Past
The eternal debate, I’m team action adventure, haha.
My favorite Zelda but far from my favorite game.
-Gunple: Gunmans Proof
I still can’t believe Nintendo allowed this obvious
Zelda clone.
-EVO The Search for Eden
It has levels! A cool and unique game for sure.
-The Twisted Tales of Spike McFang
One of the worst on the whole list, I didn’t like it at all
and not sure if the RPG elements added anything.
-Wonder Project J
Very unique, not sure if I would call it RPG
but glad I played it.
-Arcus Spirits
Another where it is mostly just an action game.
-Holy Umbrella
More platform than RPG from what I remember.
-Trinea
The signs of RPG are few.
-Alcahest
I guess the Square logo automatically made it RPG?
You can’t even save in it!
-Knights of the Round
Beat em up, with some upgrades.
-The king of Dragons
Beat em up, with some upgrades.
-Radical Dreamers
Text adventure and prototype for Chrono Cross,
can’t believe we got an official translation for it after all these years!
-Marvelous
100% adventure, not a trace of RPG.
-Harvest Moon
Farming simulator!
-Equinox
It sounds like they meant for this to be an RPG but
they never made those parts and left is an extremely
hard isometric puzzle game.
-Actraiser
Platform game with town building = RPG?
Beaten on other systems
This explains itself.
-Tactics Ogre
Played on PSP, amazing game not far behind FF Tactics,
It would probably fit in top 20!
-Dragon Quest VI
Played it on DS, I would place it between III and V.
-Romancing SaGa
I played Minstrel Song on PS2 which seems like an
upgrade in every way.
-Fire Emblem Mystery of the Emblem
I played a good bit before my save disappeared…
I also beat the DS version.
-Ogre Battle
Played on PS1 and I was not a fan, mostly because
I expected it to be like Tactics.
-Dokapon Kingdom
Played the remake on PS2.
Unbeaten special cases
And here are some that I decided to skip even though they might have
been called RPGs by others.
-Romancing SaGa 2
No translation on SNES, I will play one of the remakes instead.
-Ball Bullet Gun
A pure strategy game from what I have seen?
-Super Gachapon World: SD Gundam X
A pure strategy game from what I have seen?
-Super famicom wars
A pure strategy game from what I have seen?
-Earth Light
A pure strategy game from what I have seen?
-Dragon Ball Z Super Gokuden: Kakusei-Hen
Tried a terrible translation.
-Treasure Conflix
Just a flight simulator from what I have seen.
Untranslated, unbeaten:
Lastly a simple list of all the ones we have yet to see

others are highly interesting for sure.
